C is for Corpse

Sue Grafton

3.69 AVERAGE

I'm afraid this one has fallen foul of my 100 page rule. I just can't get into Grafton's style of writing at all, and I haven't found "C" has developed enough from "A" and "B" to make it an enjoyable enough read for me. I find Kinsey Millhone intensely annoying, the storyline makes no sense (why would a mother who's lost her only child call a PI she's met once for comfort?!) and the writing is so full of similie that it distracts from the plot. I'd also figured out who the murderer was by p100 (I checked by flicking to the end - LOL) which, for me, just spoils this kind of novel.

In general I think Grafton has good ideas for murder/mystery/suspense thrillers, but the realisation of the plot just isn't to my taste at all. I don't think I'll be reading any more Grafton novels.

3 1/2 really, this was my favorite so far, they are getting better and better!

I don't understand it myself, but I'm really into this series.

Yes, it drones on about unimportant details and is really into describing houses and plants. Yes, Kinsey is a little distant most of the time. Yes, her thoughts about her neighbour are a little weird... Yet I'm really drawn to it.

I liked how this one gave us a little more back story regarding Kinsey and her crew. I also enjoyed the mystery though some aspects of it were a little on the nose.

C is for "Classic." This series has definitely become one of the classics of the genre and fiction librarians everywhere will be continually striving to keep up with patron demand.

Really good but the ending is too fast and not completely believable.

C is for Corpse was a pretty formulaic mystery, although listening to it was still an entertaining way to waste a Sunday. I think I actually liked the subplot involving Kinsey's landlord more than the main plot, but that might have been because the person who narrated the audiobook had such an irritating way of doing Bobby's voice. I'd definitely recommend reading this one versus listening to it.

Much better plot that the first two and it was a lot more enjoyable as the pace was faster.

This is the third book in the "Alphabet Mystery" series. I have been pretty hard on the last two books. They were weirdly written, poorly characterized (in my opinion), and not well plotted. Does this book change those thoughts?

Um, kind-of? I guess. I found this book to be better at hiding the mystery. By that I mean I didn't guess the bad guy five seconds after starting the book. I even liked Kinsey more. She came across better in this book. He internal monologs are still kind of tedious to read about though, since she often focuses on the strangest things. Maybe I have a it of Stockholm Syndrome going on, but I might actually get some other books to see if they get better as they go along.

So, all-in-all bot a bad book. I still only think it is worth a 2 (maybe 2 1/2) star rating as i still think its pretty average and not great.

This was my favorite book in the series so far. Everything just clicked in this book.

How did I find this book? I’ve been reading the alphabet series.
