C is for Corpse

The quick and fiery loyalty that Kinsey feels for Bobby Callahan was just not convincing as was her complete blindness towards some glaringly obvious dots that I connected long before she finally (and belatedly) realized that they could be connected. A disappointing book.

My 2nd Grafton. This one was earlier, writing is pretty solid, it didn't end as abruptly as "Q."

Fun, quick summer reads.

I do find these A-through-Z books satisfying at times. Formulaic, of course. Kinsey is just such a independent soul.

Now that I've finished the third book in the series, I'm on t he verge of calling this more a cozy mystery than an actual mystery. Sure there is a lot of Kinsey investigating and getting into tough jams because of it, but the overall feel of the books scream more cozy than whodunnit to me. The only real departure from real mystery to cozy is the fact that Kinsey is an actual PI, and not a baker/librarian/granny/antiques dealer/insert-your-preferred-profession-for-an-amateur-detective-here.

That's not to say that these books aren't enjoyable, because they are. They're just more of a fluffy read than a makes-you-think-hard mystery.

I feel like this one was more convoluted than the last two, and the end did not tie things up neatly. I was left with a lot of questions.

Kinsey met Bobby Callahan in the gym on Monday morning. His story was hard to credit: a murderous assault by a tailgating car on a lonely rural road, a roadside smash into a canyon 400 feet below, his Porsche a ruin, his best friend dead, and his memory severely impaired

I have now read the first three books in the Kinsey Millhone alphabet series by Sue Grafton. I enjoyed them and will probably find time to continue reading them. I think of them as fluff reading and once in awhile I enjoy those books. I am sure that we all have those, quick, easy, no thought books that are almost a guilty pleasure but we don't actually care if people know we read them. So far I am enjoying them more then the "One For the Money"/Stephanie Plum series. I barely got through that first one and I finished number three of the alphabet series. Anyway I am enjoying these books but I do have a few things to say about it.

Kinsey Millhone is a good character, I enjoy that she has a background in law enforcement and knows how to handle herself. I don't like that Grafton makes her so forgetful when it comes to eating. I understand the character choice but I don't like it, I feel like it sets a scary example. I don't really enjoy that all of the action takes place in the last two or three pages of the book. I would like to see and feel a sense of menace throughout. It's lacking in that a bit and because of that I find that it gets boring at times. However I keep wanting to go back to the series so I obviously enjoy the stories. This last one "C is for Corpse" was a little disjointed. The way it was laid out didn't make sense until the reveal and I was disappointed that, that was the case. I like a sense of mystery and twists but this didn't have twists and turns, the way I like them, so much as two different stories running parallel to each other. I felt confused and annoyed for a lot of the book so that was a tad disappointing but I am going to be continuing on with the series. I am looking forward to getting into "D is for Deadbeat" when I need my next break from more serious reading.

Favorite one so far.

Kinsey Millhone, as a cocky crass investigator, matures as a character in this mystery, in which she actually solves two murders. A bit of blackmail, drugs and fraud is thrown into the plot as well. Kinsey is not for everyone as she is definitely not a "gentle" character.

The most dullest PI story in the history of the world..or universe! I would not recommend it, and if this was book 3, I cannot imagine the rest of the series. READ AT OWN RISK.
