Too slow to start and didn't really hook me. Will pick up again when more interested.

Well written, a good plot, enjoyable bad guys and well written TNG characters make this a very enjoyable book.

Interesting story that gets you from A to B but isn't written very compellingly.

Picard finally admitted his feelings on Crusher to himself, but now she is leaving for bigger and better things. However before she can start she is given a mission to save a planet from a plague she is one of the very few who can cure. When her undercover mission goes awry Picard is send to finish her mission, and if possible rescue her.

This wasn't written very well, not terribly, just mediocre. The story never really grips you, and is really bogged down in some cliches. However this is not entirely the fault of the author. The 7 year pause in the relationship development of these two characters is what has limited him significantly and forced his hand. I stand by the idea that First Contact should have opened with them already being in a relationship.

But now they are together, and the rest of the novel verse is the better for it.

3/10 is usually the highest I'd rate a novel that reads like an episode of TV. It was good. If this was a star trek episode I don't think it would have made my highlights reel, but it would be on par with other picard/crusher episodes, which this story even references.

One thing I like about a novel like this a lot, is that at 200 pages, I can burn through it in an afternoon and it only takes me a bit more time than watching an episode or two, which provides the same level of escapism that an afternoon of trek provides. I've read trek novels that I didn't get through before closing book due to boredom but this one isn't that.

If you wanna escape into a bit of harmless trek for a few hours this is a good one to go with. I've read a bunch of this author before and he does understand trek better than most.

Finally a book that dealt with Picard's feelings for Crusher. It's not the best written ST:TNG novel I've read, but I'm glad someone decided to delve into this love that Picard had been caring for almost 30 years before this book was written. We've already seen in episodes the length he would go for Beverly (remember he stayed to be tortured by a Cardassian just because he thought the Cardassian was going to torture Beverly), so it was believable that once again he would risk everything for her (which was something avoided in the movies...ugh).

The perfect 5. No flaws that make this book particularly bad. But nothing stands out that makes it particularly good either. Its like a Star Trek episode that I might skip on a re-watch. Or not. Depending on my mood.

Every once in a while my inner geek requires some Star Trek reading and this time this is what it got fed with. The story is good but not quite what I hoped for. Romulans aren't exactly one of my favorite species to read about and while I enjoyed to get some background on Beverly I would have liked more character development on all sides. I would have liked to know more about the rebels too.

Wasn't bad, wasn't great. A fun read but not the most exciting book.

The book was very meh. The main story probably could have been told as a novella. The wording seem to repeat itself as well (“of course”, “as well”). Other characters had sections devoted to them like Geordi and Worf and then they were missing from the second half of the book.
