Beautiful, Heart-Wrenching, Unforgettable

I picked up The Song of Achilles expecting a well-written retelling of an ancient myth, but I was completely unprepared for how hard it would pull at my heartstrings. Madeline Miller breathes stunning life into her characters, making their love story tender, intimate, and devastating in the best possible way.

The writing is lyrical without being overdone, and the emotional weight sneaks up on you until you’re fully swept under. I didn’t just read this book, I felt it.

Five stars, and a place on my “books that wrecked me in the best way” shelf.

hilams015's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH

The heterosexual sexual encounter was unnecessary. It was irrelevant as it had no inspiration from the source test. Too detailed. Too gross. And honestly made no sense at all

this was so sick and twisted i will be needing at least 3-5 business days to emotionally recover

(why am i even shocked at the ending i knew what happened going in,,,, probably the same reason i cry every time at the ending to hadestown)

Love this Greek retelling of the story of the greatest Greek warrior of all times, a young teenager named Achilles. He is the swift footed soldier who slayed so many Trojans, but this is the humanizing of his character, told from the POV of his faithful companion (and often eluded to as his most beloved lover), Patroclus. From his childhood mischief, to carrying the weight of the prophesies to be the greatest warrior but one who dies tragically young, to his deep love for his companion, this is a moving retelling of a great man in the form of a LGBtQ love story.
