This is Louise Penny at her best! (Wait, do I say that every time? šŸ˜‰)

When you finish A Better Man, you know the next one is going to be a little different. In this one, the setting shifts from Three Pines to Paris where Gamache and his wife are visiting their children. While I missed Three Pines, the change of scenery felt refreshing, and like Three Pines, Paris in itself is a complex ā€œcharacterā€ in this story. The change of setting also allowed Penny to further explore Gamacheā€™s relationship with Daniel. This relationship is intricate, complex, and made Gamache seem more human for me.

The entire Gamache family is involved in solving the murder, mystery, and various puzzles in this one which makes it fun. Their lives are so interwoven with storyline that for a while, the members of the family donā€™t know who to trust and neither does the reader. There are so many twists and turns, and itā€™s definitely action packed. As with many of her books, I couldnā€™t put it down near the end. I canā€™t wait to see where the story goes next!

Inspector Gamache is an automatic five star for me, sorry not sorry! This series is such a comfort read for me. Though I missed the Three Pines villagers in this installment, the Paris setting was fun and different. The mystery was complex to keep it dynamic, but not so complex you canā€™t follow along. My favorite element was finally getting to explore Gamacheā€™s relationship with his son. Gamache is so well-loved and respected by just about everyone (except the murderers he catches). But his own son essentially canā€™t stand him. Digging into those family dynamics is always entertaining to me. Iā€™ll never stop recommending this series!

4/27/2023 - I can't give enough love to this series. This latest outing in Paris was terrific. The author always brings so much history to her books; this was no exception. I learned more about Paris's history, and she continues to develop the characters and relationships of Armand Gamache.

It amazes me how I can read a book with violent crime as its focus and feel like I've been given a warm hug by the end. It's her gift that makes the reader feel as if they are part of Armand's family.

8/1/2023 - It was just as good, if not better, the second time. I had skipped book #15 before reading this one, #16, in April. I went back to this one to see what I had missed before.
