A story that hit a lot of marks for me. As a reader who enjoys graphic novels, this really made that love grow deeper. It’s a story of discovering yourself but in little strides. Most books do a huge time jump and as a reader I wonder why they do it. Could it be time or lack of events happening between a to point b. In this book, we get all the little details that help us understand the discomfort of the character as we read along. And once they achieve something they slowly decided they wanted, we as the reader get to celebrate with them. Such a fun read and I’m glad I picked it up.

i think this is a very important book about trans masculine identity and finding yourself and your community before the Internet. Really loved the humor and realness of Jet’s feelings. However, the awakened pacing/storytelling kept me from giving this 4 stars and really got me wanting more. I don’t know if it’s bc of the translation from Dutch or what, but there were many parts where I was suddenly transported to a different scene and I have to check to see that I didn’t miss a page in between. It felt very jerky and it kept me from really getting into the story. I also didn’t feel like I had any good introspection about Nicky or Sasha or Ken in this book, or about the lesions art teacher or Rene! I’d love to see how they knew each other and if Jet even took up the teacher’s invitation to hang out at the studio. There were so many more connecting storylines that wouldn’t made jet’s overall story a lot more richer and easier to follow if Backer just took a bit more time to develop those stories. Long story short, I just wished it was longer!

art is satisfactory but makes some scenes a little confusing + the story focuses on a lot of typical teenage relationship stuff until the very end where it feels like the trans stuff is suddenly fast-tracked to have a happy ending. I honestly thought I had missed a few pages or something but it really does tie everything up in a neat bow in a few pages after so many other pages spent on other things. it's good to have comics out there about trans guy experiences, but this one needed some more editing and a clearer focus before going to print
