Art was gorgeous and the stories were an interesting spin on folk, murder ballads.

How you gonna name a bunch of murder ballad comics after "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", use the lyrics on the back of the book, and then not use that song as one of the stories?????

Great volume. Wonderfully illustrated and classic stories.

In the Pines is a collection of short stories inspired by murder ballads. They are, for the most part, suitably creepy. The presentation is lovely with appropriately retro-styled artwork and lettering. It's an odd selection of ballads though. I've heard quite a few classic murder ballads over the years, but out of the five songs presented, most are relatively recent originals by folks like Nick Cave and Gillian Welch rather than the older traditional ballads. The titular ballad "In the Pines" isn't in the collection at all (I kept getting Leadbelly's version of "In the Pines" in my head every time I saw this book on my shelf, so imagine my disappointment when it failed to appear in the book).
It's an interesting enough graphic novel, but I would have preferred to see more of an emphasis on the traditional songs rather than the contemporary ones. That being said, they're still decent visual interpretations.

Murder ballads given the graphic novel treatment! Reminding me a lot of the old EC comics (The Vault of Terror and Tales From the Crypt). The only thing that would have made this better would have been to include the lyrics of each song picked. But still, loved it!

The art and the concept are cool. This would have been better if each story was prefaced by the lyrics to the song it's representing.

Also I wasn't a fan of the author's reinterpretation of his source material, but that's just personal preference, I guess

Five murder ballads, illustrated. A really well-done collection.
