Dustlands: Blood Red Road by Moira Young was interesting, but admittedly hard to read. The concept and ideas through this book are compelling, which is what kept me reading, but the lack of quotations around dialog combined with the accented and phonetic speech was a lot to follow. These are individually two of my biggest pet peeves in a novel, and them being combined definitely subtracted from my experience as a reader. It made it hard to understand and more convoluted than it had to be. However, I will say that the style, though not my favorite, was definitely immersive, which was a benefit. Overall, this was a good start to the series, and honestly could be read as a stand alone based on how it ends. I have the next two books, so I plan on completing the trilogy, but if you didn’t want to continue the series, this actually ends in a pretty satisfying place.
