This was fine, it wasn’t difficult to pick up and read, but I also never found myself really getting into it. As a sequel, I think it fell a little flat and didn’t add anything too new to the story or the characters. Most of the conflict between characters could have been solved with a simple conversation (one of my biggest pet peeves) and the overarching fantasy conflict never felt high stakes.
I only cared about Tycho and Jax, and wasn’t super interested in anyone else. This is also so random, but I felt like characters were always sparring or “tussling” (like a DnD session when you don’t know what else to do) and it got so boring to read and kind of annoying. Like do something else, please. Most of the scenes began to get repetitive.
There will likely be a next one, based on the ending, and I probably will read just because I want to know what happens to my boys.

I didn’t know anything about this book going in. I chose it on audible purely because Chase Brown was reading one of the characters, but let me tell you, it hooked me in!
We have three MCs: FMC Callyn, a baker who lives with her 12 year old sister. MMC Jax, Callyn’s bestie since childhood, and the local blacksmith. He lives with his drunken tyrant of a father. Then there’s MMC Tycho, the King’s courier.
It took me a good 20 chapters to realise that Tycho was not Callyn’s love interest, but Jax’s, so subtly is it done. Once the penny dropped though, I was here for it!!
Tycho’s and Jax’s romance was beautifully written. Sweet, tender, and delicate, it brought such joy to my cold, dead heart.
This is a story of intrigue, royal politics, complex relationships, and love. I loved it a lot, and now begins the wait for book 2!

I love love love this series, but this was not as good or as interesting as the first. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time for the first book, and I felt like this one dragged. I do like the characters and the world though, so I'll chalk it up to the sequel syndrome. Can't wait for the next book!
