this novella packed quite a punch. the horror aspect was very slow and subtle, but i didn't mind. in this story, the haunted house trope was used to explore grief and it was done in a hauntingly beautiful way. in the span of just a hundred or so pages the author managed to spin such a tragic, yet hopeful tale that had me shedding a tear or two for the characters.

thank you to timber ghost press and netgalley for providing this arc!

An interesting, creepy novella about a house haunted by the grief of those who used to live in it. A young woman who suffers the loss of not one, but two brothers in the same house, many years apart. She comes back to deal with the remnants of the life her brother left behind, but she finds out that there's a deeper, darker side to his death, one that hearkens back to their younger brother, whose suffered a fatal accident in the very same house.

After receiving word that her older brother, who suffered from agoraphobia, has died in her childhood home, Dakota makes the trip to her hometown to help her parents handle his affairs and things. However, this house is not what it seems….

The storyline in this book was great! The author has a way with story building in a short amount of time. However, the second part of the book felt rushed and lacking. There was so much that could have been done. I enjoyed the book overall, but I do wish there would have been more to it.

Thank you, NetGalley and Timber Ghost Press, for allowing me to receive this book for review.

Thanks so much netgalley for the chance to read this book early!
This was my first book by this author and I didn’t know what to expect at all going into it.
I had a feeling it would be a bit spooky but the whole book was just kind of blah to me.
Nothing in the book really shocked or scared me or made me want to keep reading it.
It could’ve been so creepy and good but it didn’t feel that way to me.

This was a pretty creepy read that incorporates a lot of the things I love in a haunted house story.

You get a rifted family dynamic, though this rift is only created by geographical space between our protagonist, Dakota, her brother and their parents. You get somewhat repressed memories, or memories that surface situationally. You get a creepy old house with a lot of family history. You get childhood trauma. All great aspects to a haunting type read.

I though this was written really well. I was invested in the characters and the storyline. I just wanted it to be longer. I wanted a little more to the story.

Overall, I enjoyed this and would happily read this author again.

I was granted an early copy in exchange for my honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s really short, just over 100 pages on my e-reader but was fully developed with a fair amount of backstory.

My one wish for this book, and the reason I cannot give 5 stars, is the fact that the author didn’t make the jump to full horror which could have added so much to the story.

Overall, a great read.

Mouse Trap is your next super fast and hard to put down read. After her brother's sudden death, Dakota returns to her family home where he lived alone. What was once a happy home is now filled with sadness, strange memories, and lights that won’t stay lit. This is the second death for this Victorian home, her younger brother Kai also died there twenty years ago. Tasked with getting the house ready for sale, Dakota finds herself feeling watched and unnerved. In the ever-growing darkness, a sinister force has awakened from a long slumber, and it is far from finished with Dakota. Her life and sanity hang in the balance—alongside everything she holds dear.

The plot is well-paced and full of unexpected twists and turns, keeping the reader wondering and guessing until the very end. Larrinaga's writing brings to life the sights, sounds, and fear incited in the story's world, making you check over your own shoulder once or twice during your reading session. Mouse Trap is a chilling and enjoyable read, perfect for a single sitting, that is sure to satisfy fans of ghostly horrors and fans of Darcy Coates and Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
