I liked this book way more than expected and I enjoyed the story. The characters are interesting and I liked the setting. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t for me. Bit of a non-starter with regards to plot and characters. Read like fan fiction (not that that’s always a negative).

Ashley McLeo does it again!

Odette Dane has always wanted to follow in her parents' footsteps and attend Spellcasters Academy. And as a "legacy," she didn't even have to test into the academy - she was automatically admitted. But this fact doesn't sit well with some of her fellow first-year students.

It doesn't take long before Odie realizes that this is going to be a far different experience than she expected. Her parents are legendary in the magical spy community and she can barely do any magic at all. Unless someone's life is in serious danger, that is. The more time she spends in her classes and trying to figure her magic out, the more questions she has. Is there really a curse on those in her class? Or is it more of a prophecy regarding a specific person? Why does her magic only have any real power if someone is in danger of dying? Why does her totem react so wildly every time it's anywhere near the totem that chose her boyfriend? And will she have what it takes to pass the tests that will keep her at the Academy for a second year?

I've been a fan of McLeo's writing since I first read her Starseed Trilogy. The magical females that dominate her stories are strong women, willing to work hard and learn from their mistakes, but they are never perfect. They don't depend on romantic relationships to define themselves but they certainly aren't against the idea of falling in love. And Odette Dane is the latest of McLeo's creations to capture my attention and my imagination. Whether it's dealing with an unpleasant classmate, dealing with the secrets her parents have kept from her, or learning about forgiveness and second chances, Odette is determined to give her academy years her very best. The lives of those she loves may depend on it.
