Thus completes my journey through Elan so far. I'll pick up Chronicles closer to Drumindor's release.

Esrahaddon is great. It continues MJS's trend of writing great books that tease at going into the 5 star realm, but never quite get there. It's always frustrating for me, because it's almost there, bit not quite. But I love the world of Elan and the history and characters MJS has created within it. Can't wait to see where he goes from here.

Incredible end to such a wonderful arc of one of the best modern epic fantasy worlds.

 Summary:
The man who became known as Esrahaddon is reported to have destroyed the world’s greatest empire—but there are those who believe he saved it. Few individuals are as divisive, but all agree on three facts: He was exiled to the wilderness, hunted by a goblin priestess, and sentenced to death by a god—all before the age of eight. How he managed to survive and why people continued to fear his name a thousand years later has always been a mystery...until now.

Re-Readability:
Absolutely will re-read this probably several times in my life.

Characters:
I'm not a particularly character-driven reader, but I do tend to love MJS' characters. For the first half of this book, I wasn't really loving Esrahaddon/Esra. I was mostly neutral toward him, with moments of annoyance -- he had moments of being really arrogant and snarky, not in a fun way, and then a couple of moments of some incel ass behavior, imagining some future romantic relationship with someone who he clearly only had a strictly platonic relationship with and who never showed any interest in him and then acting like the "love of his life" left him... just gross shut up.

However, then he grew up a bit and realized how immature and silly he was in his younger years, and I did like him more then, about half-way through the book.

Jerish was another character who at first I felt neutral-to-annoyed with -- the character trope of the duty and honor bound soldier/warrior who literally only does what he is told and what he has been told is the good and right thing to do... blech. However, I also warmed up to him as it went on -- he proved that he could get new information about the world around him and make different deductions and choices and see grey area in his code of honor.

I really liked Nevrik also!

Plot:
I definitely got fully engrossed in the plot here -- I mean, I'm pretty biased, being an enormous fan of the World of Elan in general and all of the lore and history we have here to really sink our teeth into. This book had SO MUCH of that. SO MUCH! I loved all of that. The easter eggs/connections and putting all the pieces together (well, not all of them).

This was such a good story of self sacrifice and doing the hard things for the long-term greater good.

Themes:
Friendship. Sacrifice for the greater good. Time and chaos. Creation versus destruction.

Favorite Parts:
Elinya killing Mileva. Jerish and Esra going to see Nevrik when they get back and arguing with "Harold". Jerish and Nevrik seeing and feeling the blast from the destruction of Percepliquis. Elinya noticing the bag Malcolm/Uberlin was carrying being full of something soft.

Least Favorite Parts:
Esra's reaction to Rappaport getting married. Esra blatantly ignoring obvious things like Yolric's talk about Mileva and Uberlin.
adventurous dark emotional funny hopeful mysterious reflective sad fast-paced
