I wish this book did not begin with the first generation of brothers, I thought the long introduction to the plot was tedious. In East of Eden Steinbeck asks his readers to consider whether or not people can be born evil and makes a case that they can be.
I think it's a little unsettling that a lot of the "evil" in this book is just the antagonist being a prostitute? 
I read this in my 10th grade English class, and one of my classmates shared with the class that John Steinbeck seemed to have a dislike for women in general. I'm not sure I wholeheartedly agree with that statement but I think this book could indicate some anti-woman feelings on Steinbeck's part. But it's also been 8 years since I read this. 
I remember being entertained by East of Eden and liking it a lot. It's definitely an interesting read. I'd love to read more Steinbeck one day.
