This book strips you down to your deepest wounds and makes you face them alongside the main character. It shows you just how low someone's life can go - so low that one thinks they don't even fit in the confines of what defines a "human". Imagining yourself in Yozo's situation brings a hole in your heart that would be deemed incurable would you be in his position. While definitely having disturbing themes, the character somehow makes you have sympathy for him despite him having little to none for himself and others. It's a kind of desperation that pushes you to learn more about him even if at face value, he is not a good person. Definitely a must read for anyone. It reminds you how fragile humans are and how one bad thing may not break you, but one after the other stacked onto one another will make you want to leave existence - even if you can't.

WELL this was depressing. Well written though. It spoke of feelings I kind of understand. It is awful to be so afraid of other people.

If you want to hate a man for like 2-5 hours you should read this. A pseudo intellectual white guy tried to convince me that this was a deep look into the human condition and a peek behind the reality of sever mental health issues.
And maybe that’s true if you are misogynistic narcissist who is too self-absorbed to care about the suffering you cause others. If you want to see a man be pathetic, mistreat women and waste his life all while forever whining in an endless spiral of self loathing you should read this book.
Deeply unpleasant. Its best quality is that it is a short read.
