Although his musical tastes are pretty vanilla, this is a unique look into Hornby's fandom.

I like Nick Hornby‘s style and some of his thoughts on pop were great, though a bit repetitive. I think I would have enjoyed this more had I known more than 2 of the songs he’s speaking about. Which is entirely my fault.

This was an enjoyable group of essays analyzing pop music and what draws people to music and styles of music. Each chapter focused on a song and breaks it down through stories about experiences with the song. This was a quick read, and it is written in a conversational tone, which works very well.

I love music and this is a book of essays about why nick Hornsby loves these songs. He is a genius writer in the fact that he could make me understand why he loved these songs. (Some very obscure). Thanks to rdio I could pull up the songs and listen while I was reading. A unique experience that he could not have imagined in 2003. Musical is a personal experience and I think that is why this gets a 3 stars. If you love music you will like this book.

Excellent collection of "columns" about specific songs Hornby likes and why he likes them or what those songs represent. I'm calling them columns since they are very much pre-cursors to his "Stuff I've Been Reading" columns in the Believer (which likely were starting up right as this book went to press).

This was a Christmas present last year from my dad, who got this from a rare book dealer and it still has the original CD in the back - which is good because Horny, like Rob Sheffield whose books I also like, has totally different musical taste than I do. I needed the song references.

I was not super in love with this. Probably because it made me examine myself. It made me realize that even though you think your taste in music is incredibly interesting, not everyone else does.

He says some really great things about why he likes certain songs, but it's still just a list of songs a guy you don't even know really likes.
