Perhaps it’s unfair to give a short
story a rating based on the same scale as I rate novels, but this was just not that enthralling.
It was ok, and a really short read - or listen, in my case - so I stuck with it. But I just couldn’t see the purpose/overarching objective. What message was the author trying to convey?
It was reasonably entertaining at points but compared to some other works of Atwood, nothing mind blowing.

pretty alright. I liked the implicit whimsy of the main characters childhood, just accepting her mother's excentricities. I do understand the generational connection and protection that the witchcraft ends up being, but I do wish they committed to the magic.

I was expecting more from My Evil Mother, probably because I’m not used to reading short stories, and I thought Atwood was a better writer. Some of the dialogue seemed stilted, like, “Now—now being the day of our fight over Brian—she finished grinding and scraped the contents of her mortar into a bowl.” The dialogue with her father seemed unrealistic too, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
All the same, it was an easy read. I especially liked asking ice cream from her garden gnome father.
