Fantastic mother daughter story.
"The protector was her, the greater power was her, the Universe that took an interest was her as well; always her. "I love you," I said."

So I read this little short story by Margaret Atwood as apart of the Amazon Prime First Reads.
Not too bad for a short story, but the time jumps had me a little confused at certain points. But besides that it was quite an enjoyable short story that showed the difficulties of growing up with a single mother who was a rather eclectic "witch".
Still has me wondering what was the truth of it all!
Favorite quote from the book: "Some people collect stamps, she collected penises"

I kind of loved this short story. Don’t we all become our mothers?
My unpopular opinion about Atwood is that her work focusing on women in Toronto (or in Canada) is actually much better than her more wildly read dystopian fiction.
(And no, I am not going to enter the whole Handmaid's Tale vs. Parable of the Sower debate aka the Atwood vs Butler debate. You can and should read and like both, and should acknowledge what critics of color, in particular female critics of color, say about Atwood as having validity. I discovered Butler via Atwood. One reason Butler wasn't nominated for a Booker Prize was because Americans were not eligible. Sower and much of Butler's work focuses on global impact or and Handmaid's Tale didn't - nor did it claim to. Also read the book and don't just watch the tv series because some of you are getting the point of the text wrong. Sorry).
This short story is one of Atwood's best. Set in Toronto, it contains the fantasy elements that are Atwood's trademark but is really a moving story about mothers and daughters. In some ways, it is like her novel [b:Cat's Eye|51019|Cat's Eye|Margaret Atwood|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1385207977l/51019._SY75_.jpg|1019987]. It's particularly funny because it includes reasons for grudges, and very real reasons for the absent father (this was so cute and wonderful. A lovely detail).
