I'm confused as to why this is even a thing? what is the point of this short story, It didn't make sense, it wasn't entertaining and it was all over the place. Was there supposed to be some overall message or symbolism because this was not even worth the 20 mins it took me to read. the only reason this was released is because it has Margaret Atwood's name on it.
also, this title is just 'clickbait' there is no evil mother. there is no evilness at all....

What isn’t to love by Margaret Atwood? This was a quick read that anyone who has ever been a teenage girl or had a teenage girl would enjoy.
Great story!
This story does a great job of depicting the mother/daughter relationship at various stages of life, with or without the mother maybe being a witch. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read!

Typical Margaret Atwood's acerbic humour and pithy observations! Sample:- "
I didn’t care about being respected—that was a schoolteacher thing, like black lace-up shoes—but I very much wanted to be liked. My mother frequently said I’d have to give up that frivolous desire if I was going to amount to anything. She said that wanting to be liked was a weakness of character."
Relationships are explored and enhanced subtly, gradually and carefully while staying close to societal norms through the 1950s to the present time. Brilliant!

Margret nails characterization and making her world feel real. For such a short story she really builds an emotional attachment to the protagonist and her mother.
As someone with a very postive relationship with my mother, the story reminds me that my relationship, as good as it is, was not perfect. We had conflicts, we didn't always agree. But that actually made our bond more beautiful, because it stood the test of those challenges.
It's convincing in both ways that something supernatural is going on in this text, or it's simply a lie told to a child to keep things in line. But either way, both are ultimately to protect something precious, and maybe that's the most important part anyway.

"Your grandmother was a witch," I say, as solemnly as I can.
Cute short story with a nice ending. Not much to it tho.

A witty and charming short story from Margaret Atwood. My Evil Mother explores a mother/daughter relationship in 1950s suburbia, with a playful twist that blurs the line between truth and tall tales. Atwood’s sharp writing makes the family dynamic and commentary on gender roles feel fresh and engaging. I just wish there had been more. Funny, clever, and a cute quick read.

I'm sorry Marg, but I hate your writing style 😔 So much telling. I'm sure a lot of people love it. It's definitely not for me tho. I couldn't get past 13%
