Another interesting addition to Alexa Martin's world; however, similarly with the other books in the series, the complicated story-lines take too convenient results to solve them.

I received an ecopy of this book via Netgalley; however, my opinions are my own

This was published in October 2020 and whew am I glad I waited until now to read it because this way I could engage with our protagonist (Elle) where she is at. I would have just been mad at her in 2020.

Alexa Martin. What a brave book to write. This one seemed to say “fuck you” to the NFL (the culture, the league, the owners) so much more than the previous books. And it deserves it. If this is the end of the series, it’s a good end. But I will read you write about athletes forever because you write about them so much better than so many others (the hours, the meetings, life after sport, etc).

Also please continue to roast the suburbs of Denver that want to be even more suburban. I can’t get enough.

Elle’s realizations about her biracial identity felt really fast on the backend. I wished they had been a little more spaced throughout the book? Or a little more story before the epilogue? Just mentioning therapy and like “cool we’re gonna work on this” felt like trying to beat a word count. But maybe that was right for most readers, for Martin, and for October 2020.

Honestly get this book on some curricula - racial identity, sports and politics, athletes and medical care, role of the family - it’s got so much.

(I also pictured Shanahan as the owner which is inaccurate but the references to the tan and the teeth just killed me)
