When I first read this book about ten years I never bothered to look up in a dictionary this unfamiliar word "lathe" in fact i may not have read this book at all but only seen a film made for television (with Le Guin's participation). Today I came across a technical manual about the watchmaker's lathe, and finally understood that my ignorance of the word hurt not only my enjoyment of Le Guin's book, but, more significantly, prevented me from until now translating an important experience from my life before English -
