Perfect book. Incredible. Felt like something timeless. Need to read the rest.

This is such an interesting book
I've seen the show before and heard so many things about it but didnt know it was a webnovel series
I cam across this purely by accident at my local bookstore and don't regret it at all.
They story is very easy to read and keeps you engaged the entire time with Wei Wuxian's witty and relatable commentary and sense of humor making it an easy read, plus the inclusion of the appendices and footnotes make the culture divide a lot easier to cross

The story left off at a very interesting point and I cant wait to see what happens next

This book actually solved a lot of problems in my life. I love the relationship that’s developing and the mystery plot line is keeping me intrigued.

You may be asking yourself "Is this book good?" and the answer to that is:

No.  No, definitely not.

You know, I don't really read light novels, and that's mostly because every time I do they're just... kind of bad? It's got to be a translation thing. I imagine that books written in East Asian languages are incredibly difficult to translate in a way that is pleasing for English speakers, and I likewise doubt that they're shelling out money for the best translators for things like light novels.

But here's the thing: Even if this book is kind of objectively bad, it's also a lot of fun.  That, and I'm already a big fan of The Untamed, the C-Drama that is currently on Netflix.  And I love the characters. And the art was pretty.

So I thoroughly enjoyed reading this truly, objectively terrible book.  I had a lot of fun with it. I'm going to read the rest of the series, and then I'm probably going to read other Mo Xiang Tong Xiu books too, because dammit, sometimes I just want something fun, even if it is, again, really quite atrocious.

This rating goes for all five volumes.

As a huge fan of the live action, ‘The Untamed’, I was equal parts excited and nervous to read the novel. I thoroughly enjoyed Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s other novel, Heaven Official’s Blessing, so I thought: why not give this a go, especially since I wanted to read the scenes that had been cut out of the drama due to censorship.

I’m not sure whether it is due to the translation or if the source material is similar, but it felt like a poorly written fanfiction. The overly-colloquial language used, the way the story seemed to show itself on a platter instead of being unraveled… The more I read the worse it seemed to get.

Word choice aside, the content itself was rather questionable and made me less able to appreciate the scenes where the relationship developed. Personally, I wasn’t a fan of how the relationship seemed to develop only when Lan Wangji was drunk. I’m aware that Lan Xichen had mentioned that Lan Wangji struggles to talk about his feelings, but I feel that it would have been much better to see him slowly learn how to communicate his feelings for Wei Wuxian over time, as opposed to all at once while he was drunk, and then pretty much going back to square one with very little development.

I was also uncomfortable with the lack of consent. Although it’s clear that it’s something Wei Wuxian is into, the boundaries are never set before the lack of consent is established.

Honestly, I would only recommend this to people who enjoyed either ‘The Untamed’ or any other adaptations. As a book on its own, I would not have enjoyed it if not for my love of the live action adaptation. I did enjoy reading some original scenes that had been cut out or changed, and while my experience wasn’t wholly negative, I was quite let down by both the language and the content.

I will never not love these two. So, that's all I have to say. Wei Wuxian is even more mischievous and flirty than in the love action and donghua versions AND I LOVE HIM. Lan Wangji is even less expressive and that's frustrating but alap kinda good. He's got a lot more muchness in the book, all respect to Wang Yibo (who I adore and think did an amazing job on the live action).

I'm looking forward to the next book and seeing what else is different from the show, aside from the obvious.
