Pretty solid start for a series.  There's a huge cast of characters who have various forms of address so it can be difficult to keep track of everything in the beginning.

The dynamic between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji is hard to describe of only because you don't know the whole history they have yet, nor where it will go in the future.  So far, one is basically a class clown/jock type while the other is a stoic nerd type and I'm having a great time with it.

This is the first translated work I've read that wasn't for school.  I enjoyed it a lot.  It is a Chinese Fantasy novel.  We follow Wei Wuxian, a powerful Cultivator who went down a very dark path and was eventually killed by those he'd once considered friends and family.  Sixteen years after his death, his soul awakens in the body of a disturbed young man who wants Wei Wuxian to exact revenge on his behalf.  But the past refuses to stay buried and he must unravel this mystery with the help of his friend Lan Wangji, a very proper and powerful cultivator himself.

This is the first book of five and I loved it.  The characters are well rounded, and even the more antagonistic characters are enjoyable.  For a story with many dark twists and turns, it is suprisingly lighthearted and funny.    The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating is simply that the first chapter was not very enjoyable to read and I almost gave up on the book very early because of it.  However once that smaller part of the larger story was finished the book picked up pace and it was very hard to put down.  A definite recommend, cannot wait to read the next book.

Thoughts after the second reading
This time, I read the english version, and all the griefs I had with editing and language levels are gone !
It is indeed a difficult story to review when you don't have the whole story. I must say it is even more enjoyable when you know the rest of the story ! The rereading possibility is a real strength of this volume : it really makes for two very different experiences. The first reading had me discovering the world, the genre, and the realtions between characters, uncovering bit by bit as the story progresses, just as Wei Wuxian rediscovered the world 13 years after his death. It was fun and enjoyable, but the second reading beared so much more emotionnal power !! Rereading passages with the knowledge I have now made the experience much more emotional and powerful. It was especially enjoyable and with the bigger picture in mind, I can say this story truely is part of my favorites stories ever.
When my friend recommended me the books, I was expecting a good romance. And indeed, it truely is, I love every bit of it, and the books are jam-packed with interesting scenes that flow very well. It is an very slow burn romance, but that's exactly what I like. But I wasn't expecting to be an overall exceptionnally good story. This is a narrative where flashbacks put a spotlight on parts of the story and history allowing a better understanding of the whole. The pace is solid and flows well, and there is so much to discover !
The more I read, the more I liked the two lead characters. If Wei Wuxian is -to me- absolutely unsufferable during his 15 years old flashback (as a 15 years old may be), I very much like his adult voice. And Lan Wangji's personnality and hidden intensity really on my heart.

Thoughts after the first reading :
Disclaimer : I read this tome for the first time in its translated French version, which has very poor editing and none of the picture. I am much happier with the english version.
As it is the first part of a larger story rather than a first volume (it has been translated as such), I'd rather review the story as a whole.
It is very interesting to me to read this genre, because as I don't have the codes for the genre, it feel like discovering high fantasy for the first time ! I am really enjoying the cultural discovery.
The style can been unusual for a unused reader (frequent sudden changes in point of view, abrupt variations between humour and seriousness and variations in language in dialogue).  > Either I got used to it, or it was less obvious because English is not my mothertongue, or maybe it was just poorly done in the French version, but I didn't have the same feeling with the 4 other books in English.
I can't wait to know more about the mysteries.
Last but not least, I really like the characters and the way their relationship begins to develop.

Going into this book I expected an info dump, and that's exactly what I got. I am having some issues with the writing style: there's indeed a lot of info, some of the character interactions feel stilted, and I'm not used to double (and sometimes triple) exclamation marks in a row.

It could be a cultural thing? It could also be a translation issue? I am not Chinese nor have I read a lot of Chinese novels so I can't comment on that. Either way, despite my issues I still looked forward to reading every day, so I'm still going to give it a 3 star. The plot and characters were interesting enough, I found the romance lacking but I am hoping it's just very slow burn and the next book will have more of it. Yes, I am intrigued enough to continue with the second book!

Additionally, the cover is beautiful and the art inside enhances the story in a nice way, I have stopped many times just to look at all the pieces again.

I decided to give the novels a try after watching the drama, CQL.

And after reading just volume 1, I will say, I appreciate the novel for expanding and clarifying the lore, but I think my "canon" will be the drama.

MXTX truly struggles to relay exposition in a smooth manner, instead choosing random info dumps that derail the plot and make it very unclear who knows what. I have no idea what information Wei Wuxian knows (or how he knows it, after coming back) and what information is included just for me, with him unaware.

This story is a diamond in the rough. Knowing what I know about how this ends (and also how much has been changed from original text to adaption, as I have also read the manhua and also several posts comparing the drama to the novels), I think the drama improved this story which lays down an amazing foundation. Great ideas, intriguing characters, but so much mess in between.
