This was a fast read with some good artwork, but it wasn’t super special. Everything ends up feeling kind of rushed and underdeveloped. Still, I liked the art and the girl-centric story, so I’ll probably read Volume 2 when it comes out later this year.

Wow okay wait I enjoyed this so much! It’s a girl-powered slice of life roller derby story, and was super fun to read. I loved the characters, the energy of the sport, the celebration of the body, and the very real feeling look at how women balance their lives and friendships. I saw some other reviews saying the plot felt lacking, and I understand that argument, but for me personally it hit all the marks. SLAM is just really chill and realistic, and I want to be friends with the derby girls so bad now!

beautiful colors and lovely artwork are not enough to make up for a sloppy story that doesn't flesh characters out enough to make the drama interesting. i really disliked that the only black woman w/ anything important to do in the story is painted as overly aggressive and angry. also having a roller derby story with no dykes should be a crime.
