I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I LOVED this one!!
In this second instalment, Helen finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into the murky, morally messy world of the Dark Days Club. Having been raised with the black and white morality of a god-fearing Lady, she must now come to terms with a world where the course of good versus bad is not so clear at all. A web of deception starts to weave itself around Helen, and she must grapple with the competing motives and agendas pulling her in every direction.
In the first half the story is building - from about halfway through, I could barely put the book down until the end!! The story is dark and tension-filled and an absolute blast!
I loved getting to know Mr Hammond more in the first half, I missed him a little in the second when he all but disappeared. I absolutely hate the Duke, but I think maybe I'm meant to feel a bit irritated by him and his insistent solicitations. The Earl is a tormented Mr Rochester type character that you can't help but feel drawn to, just as Helen is.
Helen really becomes badass in this book and I loved that.
Although YA, this book does not hold back from messy brutal deaths and visits to "bawdy houses" (brothels).
This book was again spectacularly researched and I loved the author's note in the back about all the real historical figures she incorporated into the story.
The ending of this one is explosive and I can't wait to rip straight into the third!

I have loved this series thus far and loved the way the author wrote the story. But starting at the 50% mark, it seemed as though she decided to throw every possible thing at Lady Helen all at once. There were so many insane things that put Helen in such compromising situations that I just don't think would ever actually happen. My main issue was after they try to get the journal from Lowry and the Duke comes by when they're all fighting, sees Helen and over hears the twin brother talking to Helen about the Dark Days Club. So, naturally, Pike must make the Duke of Selburn a member of the Dark Days Club because otherwise their positions are all compromised I just couldn't believe it and after that scene, I DNF'd it because it was just becoming too ridiculous at this point. There is no way Pike would allow that to happen and no way that the other Duke would ever let that fly. How this person so easily joined the Dark Days Club out of thin air and was told all the Dark Days Club secrets even though this person literally just joined and prior had no knowledge of the supernatural world was just so unbelievable to me.
