There’s a comment from comicbook.com on the cover of vol 3 that reads “Fence proved western comics can do the sports genre as perfectly as any manga all-star, and it does so without breaking a sweat.” — honestly I have to laugh.
If one were truly to compare Fence to say Haikyuu!! or other sports manga, there is not nearly as much depth in the characters, plot, teamwork, and backstory of these first 3 volumes of Fence. I kept giving this series a chance, hoping for more improvement but was continually let down. The story still reads as a large amount of conceited and entitled young boys trying to get their way with anything and everything (loved the development with Eugene though & it’s clear Harvard/ Kally genuinely cares about team dynamics). Compared to other sports mangas, Fence attempts to build even less significant plot lines and character dimensions and still barely manages to do so. If this series is to continue, I think it needs to move away from trying to compare itself / be something that it’s not — it is a western comic that has potential for growth and should not take after the sports manga genre if it’s only going to be a mediocre copy.

I get so caught up reading these issues that I forget how short they are and nearly scream in frustration when I reach the end. Loving this series so far and eagerly awaiting more!
