I relate to this book a lot because I love to cook. I understand when she talks about her being in a zone while she cooks.

Really enjoyed listening to With the Fire on High. I also loved and appreciated how the author read her own book. Sometimes it felt like a friend was telling me this story and ended up getting really invested in the characters.

So beautiful again! The writing was so powerful and the protag Emoni was so easy to follow and love, I absolutely loved the ending and the themes introduced, and of course Emma was so cute! I just really admired Emoni's strength and talent, and on top of that the romance was so adorable! And the food she made all sounded delicious and I just loved this whole book, all the elements were just so well-balanced and well-written and I'm just definitely a fan.

High-school senior Emoni Santiago has a lot of responsibility and tough decision to make regarding her future. She wants to be a chef, but she has a daughter to care for and her abuela to help support. When her school starts a new culinary arts class, she jumps at the chance. In this class, she needs to learn the importance of following the rules...but she quickly finds a way to do that while also being creative and taking care of the people she loves.

So amazing! The language is effective. Not flowery, but also not simple. Emoni is smart, capable, and dedicated to her family. It was so refreshing to have a strong, kind, driven main character. Explored a lot of topics, but not in an heavy-handed way.
