Highlights: The three, shall we say, "creature features,” — Sullivan’s “Yeshua’s Dog,” Baker’s “Feral Frolics,” and Cowdrey’s disturbing “Golden Girl” (sorry, bit of a spoiler there) — were very good; hey, they could have done an animal-themed issue instead of whatever that vague “political-correctness” theme was supposed to be.
The novellas were the standout of the issue: Michael Libling’s “Hollywood North,” though somewhat unresolved and too open-ended for me, had me hooked with its protagonists and evocation of small-town life. I love Village-with-a-Secret stories, and this one was interesting and complex in ways I didn’t expect.
The other favorite was Rand B. Lee’s excellent “The Judging.” I missed Lee’s first story from 2013, but this beautifully imagined universe of jagged probability zones is one I want to spend more time in, i.e., I’d happily read a whole series. Also, I want a telepathic dog.
