it's not my style and the poems felt repetitive, like every single one was trying to say the same thing

Nikita has a way with words that gives a voice to women who face trauma and its effects every day.

This book of poems is incredibly encouraging and does what a good book should. It tells us that we are not alone.

This is my first Gill experience, and it really wasn't a bad one. Lots of good insights, emotions, and refreshing word usage—not the same ultra-basic language within most contemporary poetry. I thought this collection started out strong with the space theme, and I wish Gill had continued it instead of shifting themes several times. I did like the fairytale and princess section though because I saw some real effort and out-of-the-box thinking there. But I also wish that the punctuation had been edited better for clarity. Overall, Wild Embers is a solid piece of self-love, healing, confidence, and mourning. A small portion of it does become repetitive if you notice the patterns, but the writing feels wholehearted.

I didn’t find this one as interesting as their other poetry book I had read. I think it’s probably because this book is one of their earliest works and the one I fell in love with is very recent. Can see how their work has changed and evolved over time.

Will definitely still read their other two books I purchased already 🤗✌🏽

So here’s the thing: I wholeheartedly respect and have appreciation for this collection.

Will it resonate with me, personally, days from now, months from now, years from now, the way I want? No, but that’s okay. Because I also know it will and has resonated with many.

I find the subjects to be incredibly important, the messages to be totally on point. Overall, it was fairly succinct and decently written, as well.

However, it fell short in a few ways that will keep it from staying with me. For one, I feel like thematically, there were four separate books of poetry condensed into the one volume. I don’t think the overlap did it any favors. It made it less impactful, for me. Then there were the “retellings” of the women of classic fairytale/literature/mythology - again, I totally appreciate the purpose of these poems. However, they came across a little....hokey? But I think that’s partially just the annoying pretentiousness I’ve unfortunately picked up in regards to poetry, which is something I’m fully aware of and realize will not be an issue for many readers. Which, honestly, I’m thankful for because I feel like these poems really are meant to be and can be very empowering for women of all ages and walks of life. Also, I feel like several of these pieces were just under edited and could have really used some refinement.

I think there’s a lot here, for a lot of people. It may not be a top favorite of mine, but I do think in many ways it is very worthy of the praise it appears to have garnered.
