The first of the Miss Silver mysteries, written oh-so-long ago; a true British cozy, this one featuring a masked villain running a crime ring, an endangered orphan heiress who has big baby blue eyes and may be dumber than my ragdoll cat, star-crossed lovers, bad guys galore, a hat model....just so much fun.
Honestly, too menacing and aggro towards the women characters. Which may be what the author went through herself but it was starting to stress me out

This book is saved by its final chapters. It started off well, but then there was just a lot of foreshadowing and very little action. Another thing that irritated me was Margot - she was tiresome and too childish for an eighteen year old. Her constant prattling made me want to roll my eyes.
I guessed who Grey Mask was part way through, but I was still impressed by the big reveal. I also liked the romantic aspect of the novel (Charles and Margaret’s story) and wish it was dwelt on more.
Overall a good book, but I was disappointed by Miss Silver - she was nondescript, void of personality, and on the periphery of the mystery rather than in the centre of it. Also, she seemed to just know things and be in the right place whenever it was convenient. Hopefully the next book is more exciting.

This is number one in the series, and I will try number two. The first book in any series has to give you an idea of who the characters are, and is usually one of the weakest in the series. I found two of the characters so annoying that I almost stopped reading, but I doubt they will appear in the next book.
