I loved the end of this and where it met the pandemic part and found it really well written / moving (especially in the epilogue where he writes that
Mary’s death during c19 was based on his own mothers death
the earlier ww2 and its aftermath bits I found less interesting and found it hard to really distinguish some of the characters from one another, especially as it flipped back and forward between times
