Bournville

Jonathan Coe

3.81 AVERAGE

Bournville tells a family story at the pace of memorable moments in British history, from the end of WWII till the first corona lockdown. Societal changes and political conflicts intertwined with personal stories is trade mark Jonathan Coe.
Especially, the description of the ‘chocolate war’ fought in European Parliament committees between British and French/Belgian MEPs is highly amusing and painfully close to reality I imagine.

Aspettative troppo alte? Forse, ma per niente avvincente

Unbelievably boring! A write-by-numbers lazy narrative with undifferentiated and forgettable flat two-dimensional characters to whom nothing happens except to act as clothes hangers for a timeline of English history from WWII to now of supposedly key uninteresting events, books, movies and technology. And utterly failed to use that glorious chocolate setting to the full effect it deserves. I mean… it’s Cadbury’s ffs! It gets one star for the chocolate cameos.
