What a disappointment! For the majority of the book, NOTHING happens. The team blunders around not solving the case, Nell blunders around not doing anything really except whine about how her powers are evil, and all the repetitive readings of the land and stopping by her dusty house are interspersed with ridiculous sentences like “the new bed was the size of a barn (or something). Except not really.” REALLY??? Her bed isn’t ACTUALLY the size of a barn? No way! 🙄🙄🙄 Hunter continually states (and restates) the obvious, which makes the book even more tedious.
The case isn’t all that interesting but is made wildly convoluted with numerous characters, many of whom we never actually meet, and some of the team’s actions make no sense at all. Why couldn’t Tandy and T. Laine (why not just Laine???) CALL the prison instead of traveling all the way there to find out that the guy they want to speak to is dead??
The action picks up towards the end, but it escalated quickly into what almost seems like a parody. And I’m sorry, but Nell growing leaves out of her nails and neck was kind of repulsive...🤢
The issue with Tandy from book two is never addressed, and none of the other characters really have any growth, except perhaps Mud.
The entire book was a letdown! 😠

I have quite liked the author’s Jane Yellowrock series. However, I wasn’t really convinced after the first installment of this series and, unfortunately, I think this is the last one in the series that I will bother to read.
At around 40% read I was quite frankly bored. Nothing worthwhile really happened apart from the main protagonist floating around and whining about this and that. For instance, how many times do we have to read about the bloody “vampire tree” that her blood had “mutated”. Vampire tree? Seriously?
And then we have that horribly stupid “church talk”. Come one! Church talk. More like retard talk.
Towards the end of the book it just gets weird with with Nell getting into some plant world/dimension/whatever. This was simply too boring and too weird for me. The book is not poorly written which is why it gets two stars and not one but it is not really a series for me.
