I received a copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review.
I’m writing this review up in October when I finished this ARC that I am holding review on until one month before release date as per publisher’s request at Net Galley. I have seen some other comments about the book posted over at Goodreads and can tell already that my review is going to be an unpopular opinion on a book that will probably have a ton of five-star reviews. I must be honest through, so don’t hate me or send me nasty comments and email because this book did not work for me. I am just one opinion and I suffered through a book that didn’t work for me from the beginning to earn the right to write a negative review…
I read the first book in this series over a year ago and didn’t write a very good review of it, so it took me a bit to remember what was going on in the story. This book didn’t help much as it is wildly different from the first story. I remembered liking the first one, enough apparently for me to want to request the next one, but after finishing this book I can’t remember what drew me to this story in the first place. This story was a chore for me to get through, the only reason I continued beyond my 50 page DNF cut off is I kept expecting it to get better. It did and didn’t, so I do have conflicted feelings about the story, but not enough to continue on. This book is where I leave the series. I wish the author and all its fans well and hope they enjoy the rest of the journey. I’ll be off in another world I enjoy more…
So why didn’t this book work for me? A major problem I had was the pacing. It was far too slow, the action wasn’t there until the second half of the book and most of it being at the very end. There was too much politics. It was just plain boring in that aspect. So much of it could have been condensed in order to shorten the book and perhaps pick up the pace a bit. I still liked Paige, but Warden was missing quite a bit from this story and I think he was what attracted me most in the first story and his absence hurt book two for me. For much of the book I also couldn’t quite grasp what the hell was going on. I understood the words I was reading, but I just didn’t understand the world the story was unfolding in. Maybe it was that there was too much time between book one and two, or maybe it was just too complex for me to figure out. I also found the chemistry between characters lacking. Everyone was out for themselves in this story. The sad attempt at a romance between Paige and Warden was weak and didn’t seem to develop, and I really didn’t feel like there was any community to root for. The Rephaim are jerks, the Scion corrupt, along with the Mime-order. I needed someone more than Paige to root for, and didn’t find anyone.
So there you have it, my I-know-its-going-to-be-unpopular review. I’m just being honest and this story did not work for me. I wish I had given up on reading it at page 50 instead of holding out hope it would improve.

Really enjoyable, but I decided to stop reading the series here. Nothing wrong with it, I just simply chose to move on.

This book was worth the additional 3 month wait from the orignial release. I am looking forward for the rest of this series. i enjoyed the different take this book went as it continued Paige's story.
I did not want to put this book down mainly to see when or if Paige and Warden would be reunited. The complexity of these two characters together or alone is unbelievable. There is so much that I can't wait to read how they grow independently from each other and together as a hole in any form that takes.
I have so say that I like the genre twist of adding two mysteries instead of keeping to the path that the first book took. The plot twist keep me reading wondering who done what and what really is going on.
And I did not see that ending coming.
