The jokes about the main characters sexuality made me uncomfortable and I understand maybe that's the author being subversive and putting in characters you aren't supposed to like, but it didn't land for me. I also think the "journey" aspect of the book felt super truncated and unbelievably convenient to get to the main city. Also why is the city so dirty if the robots killed all the humans because they were destroying the planet?? Too many plot holes.
I do wish we got to see the original version of this book since I think it could have been stronger.

i finished this but at what cost.
this was, for me, chock full of tropes i don't enjoy, characters that start out endearing and gradually turn grating, and multiple sections of exposition dumps. i don't know that i can fully fault tj klune because based on his acknowledgements at the end, he's not entirely happy with this one either. also, the "reduce, reuse, recycle!" short story at the end was incredibly emotional and well-written, so. you could honestly skip this book altogether and just read that and you'll get a much better experience.
as a final note: if you're somewhere on the asexual spectrum, diversity win! the last human alive is asexual and sex-repulsed, and constantly put in situations that are uncomfortable for him because of it! (can you hear the sarcasm in my voice?)

Not my favorite by the author by a long shot. Felt a little juvenile, but I think if I were a kid I would have absolutely loved it. Still love TJ Klune and will continue reading all he does.
