I loved the Inheritance series and was anxious to find out if he could deliver on this new branch of the story. UPS couldn't have done it better. Paolini is such a good imaginer of worlds and conflicts and beings, and after the imagining he tells the fantasy with passion and clarity. I was reminded why I loved the first 4 books and can't wait for more. And trust me when I say he set the stage for much more to come.

At times, I had to remind myself that reading is a journey, and it’s okay to meander along.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and returning to Alagaesia. I read the Eragon series as a middle-schooler, and I was not about to reread them all, which ended up being fine. There were a few references I didn’t fully remember, but none of them were critical to understanding the book or plot. I enjoyed the adventure and was surprised at how dark it got but appreciated the adult-level of it.My main complaint is that, until the end, this book was mostly free of romance. Adding in the romantic bit in the last few pages seemed unnecessary, and I wish we could’ve seen Murtagh make a real friend, rather than progress towards a partner. I think it would’ve shown the work he’s done towards trusting others without putting romantic love above and before platonic love and relationships.

Slow, lacking character development. A nostalgic trip to a universe that I was obsessed with as a child and a nice bookend to a series that got me into reading, but would be difficult to get through otherwise. The first third of the book was a fun adventure but from Murtaghs arrival at the dreamers lair onwards the pace takes a sharp downturn and the characters stagnate. The finale picks up a bit, but not enough to recover fully. It is nice to see Murtagh finally get a happy ending though.

A few plot holes in this one that were a bit frustrating, but it otherwise has all of the nostalgic style of an Eragon story.
