Absolutely terrible. It’s hard to believe it’s written by the same author as Eragon. Completely nonsensical plot that could have been wrapped up 300 pages sooner. The writing strips all agency from the cast in inheritance in a way that just doesn’t make sense. Very disappointing. If you enjoyed Eragon I would actively recommend against reading this book.

I'm glad I read this to satisfy my own curiosity. Paolini's writing has grown up, to match the generation of us who grew up reading these books. The story is darker and more nuanced. But I wasn't amazed. The story didn't need to be so long, and the world underwhelms me as an adult.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book, the middle was redundant and could have been condensed, but the ending saved it.
