While I love the universe, I just found this a slog to get through. Good ending though :)
It was wonderful going back to my favorite world. I can’t wait to visit again with (hopefully) the next installment.

I’ll start with the fact that I love Paolini’s work and the world of Alagaesia in particular. I have loved the Inheritance cycle since Eragon came out. It was a blessing to go back to that setting and those characters after many years and I thoroughly enjoyed that. Murtaugh is a spectacular character and his development warranted all of the additional work it received. However, for as impactful a character as he had been in the Inheritance Cycle, this book has an odd way of making him feel rather small over its first half. The conclusion makes the it all worth it, but I found the early-level D&D-style quests over the first third of the book a little underwhelming. Still, the conclusion is certainly worth the wait and the story pays off nicely. Certainly would recommend.

This was a boring read… I’m a huge fan of the Inheritance Cycle and was excited for Murtagh’s story, but his character was unfortunately weighed down too heavily by his past, with only a few new insights into his character. His main characteristic is cautious, which made for slow development. I couldn’t find the man underneath all he’d suffered, beyond the few key characteristics of his from the Cycle such as his strong mental wall.
