We're back in the same universe as When Dimple Met Rishi and it's wonderful.
This book is about Ashish Patel and Sweety Nair. Ashish is going through a hard time after a painful breakup and he's lost his confidence. He agrees to let his parents pick a good Indian American girl for him to date. Enter Sweetie. She's not the stereotypical girl that Ashish was thinking his parents would find. She's feisty, a star track athlete, a wonderful singer.. and she's "fat". Sweetie's mother doesn't agree to the match, however, Sweetie and Ashish decide to date behind Sweetie's parents' back. Ashish's parents find out and have them sign a contract with planned dates of their choosing: visiting a temple, celebrating the festival of Holi, visiting Ashish's eccentric aunt. The story goes from there....
This book is truly a delight. I loved reading through both Sweetie and Ashish's perspectives. Ashish and Sweetie are opposites in many ways but they're so perfect for each other. I related to Sweetie so much. She is a beautifully written character. She’s beautiful inside and out. She’s an athlete but she’s not skinny. She loves herself and is happy the way she is. She's everything I wanted her to be and more. We need more characters like her who challenge society’s beauty standards. Fat is simply the opposite of thin. There are many different body types and your worth should not be measured by your weight.
There are some wonderful side characters and a cameo from two people we all know and love. I liked reading about the elements of Indian culture and Hinduism. I wish I could read about these characters forever.

I'm giving this five stars for the body positivity that Sweetie radiates. I wish I had read this book when I was 14.
lighthearted
medium-paced
Low key wish I'd read this right after When Dimple Met Rishi instead of after 10 Things I hate About Pinky--still made sense but would have been slightly nicer.
I mean, I don't think Menon could write anything I wouldn't love at this point. I read this in two days and loved it, obviously.
“If the word “fat” makes you cringe, I hope you’ll stop and examine why that is. What do you think when you see the word “thin”? My guess is nothing, or at least, nothing bad. So then, is there anything inherently wrong with being fat? Or have we just been conditioned to see the words “worthless” or “lazy” or “bad” instead of “fat”?”This entire book just feels bright and summery. The romance is beyond adorable, Sweetie is fierce, and Ashish is charming. And I had the absolute best time reading it. Sweetie is such a positive and self assured character that I know she’ll inspire me to believe in myself and love myself for who I am. And I’m so happy that Ashish got his chance to shine in his own story. The book just creates this happy forcefield around you that lifts you up and makes you feel good.
Other than the fact that Sweetie's just a little too... sweet and perfect and there was hardly any tension, this was a sweet and, yes, perfect little love story.
