Okay, that ending felt a bit contrived, but other than that it was a good read.

**Changed rating to 2.75** For a lot of this book I was originally feeling it was a 2.5/5 star book, but then enjoyed other parts. Overall one of the weaker books in the series so far next to the Legacy and Spine of the World. Drizzt's and other dark elf PoVs ended up being easily my least favourite. Drizzt's "hunting" and fight scenes got overly long and repetitive, and more and more I feel like Salvatore is better at more epic large scale last stands than describing Drizzt's fight scenes. Also Drizzt as "the Hunter" was better done back in the Dark Elf trilogy, and his decision not to go back to Mithril Hall was kind of out of character based on past situations where he thought he'd lost friends. Anyway, mostly liked this for the other PoVs, especially dwarf defense of the cliff and the scheming, and even orc PoVs.

Waaaaay too long. Needlessly so. The last hundred pages are good and fast-paced, but I still have the feeling that this trilogy could have made a nice one normal length Drizzt book with the help of stern editing.

Second book in the trilogy.

The setup: The orcs have come together along with the giants, goblins and trolls. They are united and are set to take Mithral Hall and kill all the dwarves.

We really only have two plotlines in this book.

One: There's a battle and it takes the entire book. Yup, one battle, one entire book.
Two: Drizzt - he thinks all his loved ones are dead so he is alone with nothing more to do than kill and kill and kill. And reflect on those he lost, on the life he's lived.

We've got all the characters (and please spend some time to enjoy the characters names)
Drizzt
Cattie-brie
Wulfgar
Regis (now the steward of Mithral Hall)
Bruenor (in a coma for the entire book)
Banak Brawnanvil
Ivan Bouldershoulder
Torgar Hammerstriker
Shoudra Stargleam
Nanfoodle
Shingles McGruff
Tred McKnuckles
etc.

Like always we've got Salvatore's strengths - characters are amazing, action and fight sequences are without equal.

But

Not much of a plot here - the book is really just Drizzt killing orcs and one major battle at Mithral Hall.

Most of my friends think this is one of the strongest series in all of the Forgotten Realms but so far it's been one of the weakest (for me).

But I love Salvatore and will keep reading because at the end of the day what I care most about are the characters and he does characters development and character interaction better than almost anyone.

I feel betrayed, angry, and let down by R. A. Salvatore. In a series called The Hunters Blades, there is very little of the Hunter or his blades—I’m pissed, disappointed, and not sure if I can read any more books in this series. I cancelled my order for The Orc King today, and if I do go on to read them, it will be after they’re available in a box set like the other series. For now, I’m content to let their pretty (and misrepresentational) covers adorn my bookshelf, because the story within on the pages isn’t really about Drizzt at all.
