Belladonna Blackthorn (Belle in her everyday life) is 29 years old and struggling. She’s fighting tooth and claw to save her beloved bookstore from being turned into a corporate black hole of profit margins and KPIs. Then she receives a letter from her local coven, letting her know she has to go through a trial on her 30th birthday to prove her magical abilities are being used for good or lose them forever.
And Belle doesn’t … fail, but she doesn’t pass either. So she gets assigned a mentor from the coven, a sweet, charming, older gentleman who was accused of killing his older warlock brother (nobody’s perfect!) and a bodyguard in the form of a moody man in a killer trench coat (hi Rune!). Together, they work on Belle’s magical skills, and start to uncover some suspicious magic in the process.
I enjoyed this book, but the plot’s pacing was a little off for me. Belle is stressed and depressed to the extremes, and the majority of the book follows her running herself haggard, working 10 hour days at the bookstore and staying up overnight to work on her magic. For a cozy fantasy novel, there wasn’t enough coziness to outweigh the outright doom and gloom that was on every page. I really enjoyed the magic system the book created, and was thrilled to read Uncharmed, but Rewitched slightly missed the mark for me.
If you’re looking for a “I don’t know what I’m doing with my life” late 20s/early 30s kind of plot, this would be a good fit! If you’re looking for a “we might have to overthrow a ruling system” kind of plot, this would also be a good fit. But if you need turn-your-brain-off cozy, I’d recommend Uncharmed instead!
