There was a virus going around that made humans into mutants. The Protector, Drake could venture out and provided Raegan's village with food in return for a virgin tribute every year. He wanted to breed a new wave of virus-resistant humans or something but he couldn't get his tributes pregnant. Raegan was chosen to be given to Drake and apparently, they clicked so well that Drake didn't want to take any more tributes. It's a bdsm type of smut and it wasn't doing it for me. I guess the book was okay, there wasn't much plot to it, it didn't really keep me entertained.

Well this was.... wow....and....that to.....and....hell yes....and really?....and....whoa......and....yum.....and....and....yeah all of that.

OMG Ms Delta James, I loved, loved, loved your Fated Mates series but Virgin Tribute? It blew them all right out of the water.

Feisty heroine? Tick
Beastly antihero? Tick
Fantastic world building? Tick
Virgin concubine given as payment for continuing protection? Tick
Lots and lots of claiming, mating and rutting? Tick
A barbed phallus? Tick

Hold on! A barbed dick? Yep, you heard me folks, a spiky member that promises untold pleasure along with that edge of pain that just enhances everything. And boy did Drake know how to use it to good effect, I may be just a little jealous of Reagan!

If i had any criticism of the book, it would be that some of the sex scenes were a little repetitive in feel. It wasn't a big thing and it didn't spoil my enjoyment in any way, I just wanted a little variety or just something 'more'. However what we did get was still one very hot hot HOT read that I only put down because I was falling asleep whilst reading in the early hours and not really following the plot anymore.

I FLOVED the dynamic between Reagan and Drake, whilst there was a power exchange, with Drake firmly in charge, he still listened to and appreciated Reagan. What started as a non-consensual arrangement believably morphed into a genuine partnership.

Reagan had me from the start when she refused to be brainwashed by or kowtow to the Elders of the Sanctuary. She chose her battles well, never giving in, never giving up and never TSTL (too stupid to live). Drake was at heart, a good man doing bad things but from the best of intentions. He is deliciously dominant but not arrogantly alpha and I absolutely adored both him and Reagan.

The epilogue was absolutely perfect and, damn you Ms James, those very last lines reduced me to tears. THEY. WERE. PERFECT.

If you love the work of Renee Rose, Lee Savino, Sara Fields, Sue Lyndon, Loki Renard or enjoyed Ruled by Cari Silverwood, then this book is perfect for you. If you like an edgy steamy sci-fi read it's for you.

The book contains scenes of power exchange and domestic discipline. This is NOT a real world setting, so SSC and RACK do not exist here. Please don't read this just to moan about Drake 'beating' and 'abusing' Reagan. Even Reagan herself acknowledges that he punishes her poor behaviour and isn't beating her! Don't let a fictional character have more sense than a real person.

I love the fact that the heroines in Delta James'books are strong, independent, self sufficient women. Raegan, in this book, was the same. She had no interest in "going along to get along", whether in the Sanctuary, or with the Protector.

Drake and Raegan had a genuine connection from the very beginning. Ultimately, they each provided the other with something they were unfamiliar. Drake came to appreciate Raegan's intelligence and feistiness. Raegen came to appreciate Drake's care and protection of her, something she had not received while at the Sanctuary.

This foray into sci-fi was intriguing. With the different types of mutants, the explanation regarding how the world came to be as it was with the mutants, and the ritualistic determination of the Chosen One, I was engaged from the very beginning trying to figure it all out. There were also moments of action, suspense, and danger to keep you a bit on edge.

There were some similarities with the Wayward Mates series, but not enough to detract from this being more sci-fi than paranormal. This was a fast paced read with a fair number of chapters and an epilogue.

If you are offended by dominance, submission, spankings, and an abundance of sexual encounters between the Chosen One and the Protector, I would suggest you pass on this one.

The idea was interesting but the fact that she climaxed just by him putting himself inside of her literally every time got pretty tiresome.

Also, loved her attitude in the beginning but then he just...spanked that feminism right out of her? Come on now.

Tribute

Dark but read like omegaverse. This was suggested in a jealous possessive Facebook group for women who are stuffed while sitting on her man’s lap. Totally true. However there was more action than story.

Virgin Tribute is all brutal alpha male, dominance, swift discipline, and explosive sex in the midst of a world destroyed by a mutating virus.

When I started this book, what struck me was how much I hated the heroine. Seriously, for the better part of the first half of the book, I wanted a horse to fall on Reagan and crush her to death. I only kept reading because I wanted to see how the Protector was going to tame her to his liking. At the beginning of the book, Reagan was defiant and mouthy, and utterly unlikable. She got a lot less defiant and mouthy once Drake got his hands on her, but she still remained stubborn and willful. Despite that, she's also intelligent, brave in the face of danger, and loyal, and under Drake's firm hand, much more pliable. I certainly warmed towards her a lot more by the end of the book.

Quote: He laughed out loud. “Why, yes, Chosen One, I should probably start working on bringing you into heat again so I can breed you while I have you in the throes of the rut. As I recall you are a far more obedient concubine when I keep you focused on serving my need.”

As for Drake, he's something to behold. Big, bold, dangerous, extremely dominant. He's definitely of the mindset that women need a firm hand and discipline to maintain his dominance and their submission. He likes his women submissive but there's something about Reagan's feistiness that he enjoys too while he teaches her who is the master in their relationship. He also shows many moments of care and tenderness as he ensures Reagan's safety, protects her, tends to her needs and well being. What we learn as the book progresses too is he's not all brawn, protection, and raw sexual prowess. He's also highly intelligent, dedicated, intent on righting a wrong. There's so much more to Drake than just spanking, breeding, and rutting. I loved learning about Drake the man, before the apocalypse and after. I liked the man and beast he became although I suspect he'd always been a dominant man. I liked Drake a great deal and took a great deal of pleasure in seeing him discipline Reagan, overwhelming her with sexual need, and bending her to his will. It's positively barbaric but I loved every minute of it.

This is my first foray into Ms James' writing but I think I will seek out more of her books to read.

On a slightly related note, I'm thoroughly enjoying the offerings of Ms James' publisher, Stormy Night Publications. They seem to specialise in highly erotic stories that are darker and edgier than normal, with lots of spanking, discipline, and hot, dominant, alpha males thrown in. I've been getting their newsletters and right now, their books are striking a chord with me and my reading mood. I seem to want to read EVERYTHING they are publishing. Every book sounds great. I love they are in Kindle Unlimited too. So if you're into dark erotic romance, I highly recommend then.

ps. This book contains a lot of spanking and a lot of sex. There's a lot of focus on breeding and rutting. If these things are not to your liking, you might want to steer clear of the book and seek your entertainment elsewhere.
