The first story opens with “One night, you will calmly put a knife to your husband’s penis and promise to cut it off.” Quite the opening line - very intriguing! Ode-pus Complex was my favorite story of all. Opening on a plane ride where seats are switched according to the matriarchs whims, this is truly a modern love story.

This book has been called an anti-romcom and I agree, that is an apt description. I have never been to Lagos, so I can’t make assessments about all of the men’s state of mind, but I can relate to these stories. Everything is put out there, the truth is told even when it’s brutal, and this made me laugh.  I can see why this book was a best seller in Nigeria. It was a quick read, and I enjoyed every bit of it. I definitely enjoyed this book and I recommend it for sure.

I have laughed and I have cried. Half the time, my jaw was on the freaking floor.

I need more short story collections in my life.

This book was both hilarious and heart-wrenching.

Hits:
  • Every single story fully honored the title. With each story, the men got more and more unhinged.
  • I appreciated that although this book was humorous, each story also touched on a serious element, leaving you with moments of reflection.
  • Sensitive topics were handled with care.

Misses:
  • Some of the POVs the stories were written in, specifically second person, were new to me, which threw me off a little. It was a bit difficult to get into and follow those stories.
  • There was a lot of Nigerian lingo and terminology, and I think a glossary would’ve been helpful to have an enhanced reading experience.

Other Notes:
  • I think the audiobook would be best for this read to receive the full and most authentic experience.
  • This was a great “buffer” read after experiencing a genre hangover. Before this, I read two romances back to back, and this was a great way to recharge me.

Overall, this was a great read. Funny, but also thought-provoking. If you’re looking for a pick-me-up, I recommend this.

At first I was a bit confused on the writing style. But as I dived in further I began to understand the style more and how it brought out different characters.

A fun collection of short stories about the follies or dealing with men in Nigeria. Like all short story collections, there were some I enjoyed more than others, but they were all entertaining!
