really good collection of short stories focusing on the different types of love and romance in Lagos, ranging from mummy issues, to homosexuality and catfishing. the stories, though short, definitely made me gasp when the twists occurred. would rate it higher but there's a sex scene in pretty much every story and i felt it was unnecessary in the majority of them so i would skip them simply because they didn't progress the plot or make me feel any differently to the characters

3.75 stars - Brick & Lace lied; love isn’t wicked… People are

This was a great palate cleanser. Such refreshing short stories even though, again, people are WICKED. I laughed (in astonishment), I screamed, and my jaw hit the floor many times, but that made it all the more fun. I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading but I knew with the very first sentence that this was going to be insane. It’s easy to read and if you wanna read something short (the short stories make it easy to read imo) and something completely different, definitely pick this up. I do feel like some stories needed to be a bit lengthier, but that is with most short story collections. I think my fav story of all was Beard Gang. Check out for trigger warnings

This author really knows how to keep a reader entertained. If you’re not laughing out loud, your mouth is hanging open in shock. Usually with short story collections, I end up liking maybe 3 or 4 stories at most — but with this book, I found 10 out of the 12 stories absolutely entertaining.
I’m definitely excited to read more from this author. This would also make a fantastic book club pick — it’s packed with stories that are perfect for sparking fun, lively conversations.

emotional

Very intense, very different stories and characters, which sometimes could have a little more depth (i.e. a little more autobiographical background) between these 20 pages each.

So, this time around... didn't quite hit the spot like before, eh? Good for zoning out after a big book, and the stories keep you going. But 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, it's all about the bedroom antics.
Got a bit repetitive for me & these stories didn't paint the ladies nicely.

Still, if you're after something easy to get through? 𝐆𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐀 𝐆𝐎 Just... be prepared for a lot of 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 kind of thing, you know?

Repetitive. Although it's a guilty pleasure to read story after story, where women persevere and all the mad men of Lagos get what they deserve, but not so many times in a row. Also the many overly descriptive sex scenes are not for my taste, but that's a me problem and yay female pleasure and sexual agency

I thought I would enjoy this more but I didn't. It was alright.

This is a very consistent short story collection. With books like these, I often find a mix of standout stories and weaker ones, but this one maintained the quality throughout. It’s full of drama and dives into complex topics around relationships and gender dynamics, but it does so with a humorous, light tone that makes it easy to read. Some themes do repeat, but enough stories have clever twists to keep things interesting.

The writing is strong, and I really liked the bold choice of using second-person narration; it actually made me feel more immersed and invested. I also appreciated the cultural insight into Nigeria, especially Lagos. Coming from Colombia, it was fascinating to read something set in such a different context, even though this isn’t a book that’s necessarily trying to “teach” you anything.

If I had one complaint, it would be that I wish it had gone a little deeper with some of its themes. But overall, I had a great time with it.
