I almost put this book aside after that first lounge scene. It just felt like it was going to be far darker than I generally like, but I looked at some reviews, and kept going, and am really glad I did!

Thankfully, we only got one of the gritty sex scenes, and the rest was all about Russ and Gabriel. Gabriel was nicely gruff, and Russ was much more outgoing and funnier than I expected. Sure, he had his issues, but I loved how he always put on a good face. Watching them grow closer was nice, and I have high hopes for a sequel here, so we can see how everything shakes down, with the warden and the districts and everything else.

This is yet another awesome contribution to this year's DRitC event! Russ is the sole provider for his younger sister and very sick mother and fights in illegal fights as well as providing entertainment to a twisted politician once a month. Gabriel has just spent the last 9 years in prison and joins the same gym and fight team as Russ. No matter what he does, Russ cannot get Gabriel's attention and it is driving him insane. I loved the characters. There was a tenderness to them, even under their rough exteriors and the secondary characters were great. I even teared up a couple times and I am thrilled that this is turning into a series! I can't wait to read more!

I wasn't expecting to like this, because reading about distopian worlds doesn't usually appeal to me.

Gabriel found a new home, not in an upper circle with his birth family. In his now surroundings, people get by making money as they are able.
