Light to read, lovely book to get into reading again. I like that it's a YA with 400 pages, that's new for me, usually they're about 200!

On the plus side, I think it was a decently realistic depiction of a suburban teen life which didn’t conveniently forget that the kids had school at certain times and it was not difficult to follow and pretty engaging. On the minus side, most of the supporting characters could have used a bit more development to seem like real people and a lot of the plot developments felt rushed

While the book's hook -- fake dating -- is a rom-com trope, Frankly in Love goes beyond the silly premise. It's really a coming-of-age story of a Korean-American high school senior struggling with the high expectations of immigrant parents, racism at home and in the outside world, ethnic identity and the disconnect of being a hyphen American, the estrangement of a sibling, the pressures to get into college, falling in and out of love. The depth of storytelling was unexpected but incredibly insightful.

This book was just really not doing it for me. I’m not sure if the audio narrator wasn’t to my style or if the writing just seemed really juvenile, but I could already tell that this wasn’t going to be a 5 star (or even 4 or 3.5 star…) read. I do have the physical copy from a thrift store so I may pick it back up but… my hold for Yellowface just came in so I have other things I’d much rather read!
