David Yoon caught me by surprise. I relate to this book so much, being an immigrant child, being caught between my Asian heritage and growing up so American - you never fully feel like belong in either world. This beautifully written diverse read might be my fave of the year.

I knew I could expect a fake-dating trope from this book, but the execution of it wasn't what I hoped for. There was no progression of the relationship over time and it felt very rushed. I also felt that the real partners of the main characters were just used as devices to keep the main characters away from each other and then they were quickly disposed of. The cheating done by the main characters was completely excused even though cheating should never be excused that easily. It was cute at times, but mostly I was just mad at the main characters for their poor choices.

I could relate to some things in the book and I really liked how it deals with heavy stuff like racism. Butttt sometimes the characters/relationships were really cringe :[ and sometimes it felt like the author forgot about people/problems (like
brit or q) but I liked how Frank grew during the book

As a 30-year-old woman reading this books I kept thinking the romantic relationships didn't have a ton of build up or fallout; forgetting that I myself was once an 18 year old who impulsively dumped my long-term high school boyfriend to go out with a guy I had spent a week with on a mission trip right after graduation.
