This unforgiving, difficult, dependent, unreliable system of magic was so captivating to read. Every spell was a chance to wonder at the cost. The scope was wide and had the slight rush of an Indiana Jones movie where the heroes go jetting off to the next destination out of desperate necessity. What I liked was a society of wizards who were very human. Predictably and horribly human.

However, I can’t say that it stuck the landing entirely - mostly, I think where the central romance is concerned. Their relationship, I feel, is just not as strong or interesting, or believable as our main characters friends, families and enemies.

I felt a couple of good twists throughout but our major twist at the end was a little obvious. Satisfying nonetheless.

WELL. I waited 4 months I think for this to be free at the library, and I believe it was worth my wait. It is significantly lower stakes than its predecessors, which is not to its detriment. While I felt this story was more meandering in some ways than previously, the expanded world makes this necessary. I do appreciate the underlying question "What lengths would you go to, to protect yourself and those you love?". I think it was handled well
Spoiler Though it is unfortunate that the final conclusion is you need to be disgustingly powerful in order to overthrow a morally corrupt system.

It's like she didn't know how she wanted to tie things together but she kept writing anyway because she just knew the answer would come to her and she had a couple of (what she thought were) aha moments. And then she edited nothing and meandered into an ending that made no sense and had us all scratching our heads. But it was still fun and magical!

In a very positive way, this book reminds me of the short story The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas; I think if you’ve read both you will know what I mean. It somehow all worked out (except for Ophelia getting her just desserts. I get why she didn’t, I’m just not happy about it), and the found family really got me at the end there

I'd give it 6 stars if I could.
