I wanted to like this more! The first two books were so unique and fun...but I think the characters were split up too much.

When everyone was stuck in the school it allowed us to get to know the characters because they actually, y'know, talked to each other. Also, why TF is Gal spending all this time with Liesel, who we're only introduced to well into the second book? Yet characters who were a big part of the first two books are barely there.

This is also the first book where the drawn out academic magic descriptions started to grate on me, probably because I was so bored I just wanted things to move along.

This is one of the books I read when I can't get over my cynicism about the world writ large but need to feel hopeful anyway. It does an extremely good job.
