This book has shady family history, an ancient house, ghosts and secret rooms. What more could you want? The writing is amazing. The feelings run deep.
Four and a half stars. Not quite a five, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. The author's writing is beautiful, and the story was well told. I don't think this book is for everyone, hence the very mixed reviews I have read. But for me, it worked.

After having read The Art of Racing in the Rain, I had high hopes for Garth Stein's new book, but it was such a disappointment. I didn't like it.
Not convincingly written from the POV of a 14 yr old boy -- even if the speaker is writing years after the fact -- the dialogue is overwrought and unbelievable.

I just need 2 days to read it and i cried. To be honest this book made me miss my relationship with my dad, I'm speechless. Thank you very much
It is important to not compare this novel The Art of Racing in the Rain as that is entirely different in intention as A Sudden Light. Choosing instead to write a ghost story, this novel is no doubt well written and contains an intriguing plot, yet it is desperately in need of a proper edit. In my opinion, 100 pages too long, the novel expounds its twists early then holds on for too long in the second act. Nevertheless, still a strong outing from Stein that's overall story speaks of the importance of legacy and its impact on family.
