I enjoyed the first book in this series, and I'll pick up the next one. It did feel repetitive at times, and I really wanted to get to the reason why Jaxon was the way he was, and the real reason that all these students are at this academy in the Alaskan wilderness. IMHO it’s a mix of Vampire Academy & Twilight with a twist of Lost Boys. If that’s your style, and I definitely like vampire books, then this young adult story might just bite you back.

Dark Academia Meets Twilight and Harry Potter.

The story took me a moment to get into but once it got rolling it was really good!! So much action and angstiness…was not expecting that ending BUT I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

A lot of this book was very cringy.  The writing style felt like an actual 17 year old wrote it.  The amount of times that Grace says ‘af’ is annoying.  Through the whole book you are told that she is a normal human, nothing more, nothing special.  And there are certain parts that she thinks to herself, “I’m the only one who can’t save him (her supernatural vampire boyfriend with super human strength and speed).”
Maybe it’s just me reading this as an adult rather than as a high school student, but this book was very hard for me to get into.  I have heard that it gets better so I plan to continue the series but this book was rough for me.

The book definitely had some rocky and cheesy parts that I wish were better written. But I love the action details toward the end of the book. I got a twilight meets Christian Grey vibe which I kind of liked. The book has a cliffhanger at the end that basically left me wanting to know more. It does have a slow rocky start where I really wanted to call it quits on reading the book all together but about half way into the book I couldn’t do that. I really got hooked once Grace finds out the truth. I wouldn’t give it a five star honestly because I did almost stop reading the book but the end made up for the dragged on beginning.

This was my first Tracy Wolff book, and I was apprehensive going in as someone in their 30s knowing the entire book is about teenagers and after reading so many reviews that likened this to Twilight. However, I really enjoyed it and the world that Tracy Wolff is building, especially the plot twist ending. I didn’t get as much Twilight vibes as I did The Vampire Diaries, which I absolutely love so *shrug*. I also really enjoyed the author’s writing style. Book two will definitely be on my fall TBR!

THINGS I LOVED…
✧ Writing style. Tracy doesn’t do hardly any time jumps in this book, and that’s one thing that really kept me hooked. The next chapter almost always picks up where the last word of the previous chapter left off. You don’t jump ahead a day or two in the lives of the students, and I thought that was cool. I don’t see that a lot in other books.

✧ Grace’s backstory. When we are introduced to our FMC, Grace, she’s is in the midst of a tragic life event which ends up playing a major role in things later. I thought it was an interesting approach to kick off the story.

✧ The pacing. It was well-paced, which goes along with my first point about the author’s writing.

✧ The MMC. Our MMC, Jaxon, has secrets that I can’t wait to unravel and some super cool powers that I hope I see more of in the following books.

✧ The paranormal world. I like that Tracy goes for all of our favorite and beloved paranormal creatures, including one that I’ve never read about in a book and I’m excited to see where that goes over the course of the series.

…AND THINGS I DIDN’T
✧ The teenagery’ness. As a reader in her 30s, I was worried that I had purchased a book that I was absolutely going to hate considering that all of the main characters are teenagers. However, that element of the story actually never bothered me…until about 3/4 of the way through the book when the FMC begins to act every bit like a 17-year-old girl. She becomes desperate and very “love me, please love me or I’ll die” like all teenage girls think they will over a crush, and her pushing and pushing him to do what she wanted got very annoying.

✧ The secrets. Ok, we get it. Our MMC is old and had some deep-rooted secrets, grief, and guilt that he’s dealing with that he can’t talk about. I totally understand, but he goes throughout almost the entire book saying this and it just got old after a while.

A couple of things to remember.

They're literally like 12 (17) years old. that from the start to the end of this book, is a span of about 7 days, give or take.

Also, absolutely cannot stand teens in romance in any capacity because WTF do you mean he's your soulmate?? How about doing English homework instead of worrying about boys???

As a character she's sooooo madly annoying I kept having remind myself that she's literally 12, and everything is just cringe.

Definitely could not wait to see the end of this book. No, I am not going to bother with the remainder of the series, I am not interested.

Were it not for bookclub, I would have dnf'd this while she was trekking across the snow from the airport. The challenge here was finishing it.
